Pablo Picasso Tete De Femme Au Chapeau Paysage Avec Baigneurs linocut from 1962, from the edition of 95. Original linoleum cut on Arches wove paper. Reference: BAER 1284

The Pablo Picasso Tete De Femme Au Chapeau, Paysage Avec Baigneurs (Woman in Hat) is a gorgeous example of Picasso’s linocut technique. The true master of 20th Century Art, Picasso has managed in this composition to create a dual image optical illusion. The obvious image is the “Woman in Hat” which is a reoccurring theme found in various mediums and forms. The second image is that of swimmers in a pool, a scene subtly hidden in the composition of the woman’s face and hat. Shifting perspective, the woman’s hat becomes a nude floating in water. Her eye and lips are also swimmers floating across the landscape of her face towards her hair which represents waves. An ingenious optical illusion, this linocut is perhaps one of the best in Picasso’s oeuvre.

This piece is never signed due to a major dispute between Picasso and his engraver Hidalgo Arnéra over the signature. Subsequently the full edition run was halted and Picasso refused to sign any of the linocuts that had been pulled.

Linocut or linoleum cuts are always highly sought after Picasso prints. The linocut printing process allows for only a small number of prints to be printed, and often the Picasso linocut editions are relatively low. Many of the Pablo Picasso Linocuts are found in Museum collections across the globe. For the artists graphic works, any Pablo Picasso linocut is a highly collectible item.
