Lui Liu painting Midnight Ride, is a beautiful example of artist Lui Liu’s unique surrealist and dreamlike style. From the vantage point of a driver in a car, this Lui Lui painting dramatizes a bizarre narrative. As if in a dream, the driver protagonist is flagged down by two nearly nude women surrounded by a heard of sheep. The women and the sheep seem dazed, like sleep-walkers or wild animals caught in the headlights of the vehicle. Yet here is a curious urgency to get driver’s attention. Like a plea for him to awaken to their presence.
Many of Lui Liu’s paintings utilize common themes and symbology. Women and nudes are usually at the forefront of each of his paintings. Other common symbols used in this canvas include the sheep heard and even the use of the car, which can be found in other compositions. Additionally the forest landscape in the background is most certainly influenced by the Canada, where the artist now resides.
