Rufino Tamayo Sandias – Watermelons is a stunning example of the Rufino Tamayo watermelon themed prints and paintings. The watermelon or sandia theme is particularly iconic for Tamayo. After being orphaned at the age of 8, he moved to Mexico City to live with his aunt who owned a fruit stand. Due to their clear significance Tamayo’s watermelon artworks are some of the most important artworks in his oeuvre. They exemplify Tamayos references to Mexican culture, using bold and vibrant colors.
