Crash is in many ways considered a pioneer of the American Street Art movement. Growing up in the Bronx in the 1960’s and 1970’s, John “Crash Matos began his career tagging the subway trains of New York City at the age of 13. Like many of his graffiti art contemporaries, Crash would spray his name “CRASH” along the subway trains and stations with intricate graffiti script. The 1980’s economic recession is widely considered the causation for the boom in artistic and cultural fertility in New York City. During this period both the Hip Hop and Street/Graffiti Art scenes emerged, shifting the American cultural perspective forever. Crash continues to be an important artist, printmaker, and muralist within the Street Art movement.
